Mattress toppers
Mattress toppers: an extra layer of sleeping comfort
Ergosleep® mattress toppers bring even greater comfort to your body. As an extra layer on top of your regular mattress, they form a barrier to perspiration and stains. Therefore, your basic mattress will last longer. Do you opt for an upholstered basic mattress? Then you always need a topper.
What is a mattress topper?
A mattress topper, top mattress or top cover mattress is much thinner than a regular mattress, barely 8 to 11 centimetres on average. You place it as an extra layer on top of your basic mattress. Result: you sleep even more comfortably while your body gets support from the underlying mattress. The mattress topper never replaces your regular mattress, as it is too thin for that. You always need the combination of the two. A mattress topper is ideal when placed on top of a mattress with pocket springs.
The advantages of a mattress topper
Extra comfortable
With a mattress topper or top mattress you will sleep even more comfortably. It provides extra comfort and reduces the pressure on your shoulders and hips. If your ordinary mattress feels a bit too hard, you can combine it with a soft top mattress. That way, you get the best of both worlds.
Longer life for your mattress
A topper lies on top of your regular mattress and is the layer with which your body is in direct contact. The regular mattress lies underneath the topper and is protected by that top layer from dirt, perspiration and wear and tear. Of course, you want your mattress topper to remain in good quality for as long as possible too. This can certainly be achieved with a mattress protector and fitted sheet around the topper. A good quality topper will last around 5 to 7 years.
Hygienic and practical
A mattress topper has a ventilating cell structure inside that regulates temperature and moisture. So you will be less likely to get too hot or sweat in bed. A mattress topper is also easy to handle because it is so thin and light. This is not only more convenient for making your bed but also for turning and airing the mattress topper. This way, everything stays fresh and clean.
Washable cover
For even more hygiene, you can unzip the cover of Ergosleep® toppers and wash it in the washing machine at 40°C. This is especially handy if you are allergic to house dust mites. Moreover, Ergosleep® toppers have an anti-allergic Alpura® mattress cover.
Chic look
Would you like a box spring with a matching upholstered mattress? That gives an extra chic atmosphere to your bedroom, almost like in a hotel. Of course, you don't want to hide the upholstered mattress under a fitted sheet. The solution is a topper with fitted sheet on top of the box spring combination.
Bridge the gap between two mattresses
Do you have a double bed with two single mattresses on top of the slatted base(s) or box spring? To avoid an annoying gap between the two separate mattresses, put a double topper on top. That way, none of that seam will be felt.
Bridging the gap but still having two separately adjustable slatted bases?
Do you want a double bed with two separately adjustable slatted bases and two single mattresses on top? Then you cannot put a topper over it to bridge the gap between the two mattresses. Fortunately, you can solve this problem with a split topper fitted sheet. In the middle of the fitted sheet is a 'split' so it always stays around both mattresses while still allowing you to adjust each side separately.
Tips for the right combination of topper, mattress and bed base
If you buy a mattress topper, it is important to combine it with a good box spring or slatted base and a good quality mattress. Only then will your body get the best support and optimal comfort. Don't know what to choose from all the options? At an Ergosleep® shop you can have your SLEEP DNA® measured for free. That way, you can easily and quickly discover your ideal sleeping combination.
Maybe you don't buy everything at once and perhaps you already have a bed base and a mattress, to which you now want to add a mattress topper. That's perfectly fine, but remember that the mattress topper is not a solution to compensate for a worn or sagging mattress or bed base. It does increase your comfort but does not provide any additional support for your body.
There are toppers in different materials. Some materials are more breathable than others. If you tend to get too hot at night, opt for a topper that ventilates well. This is the case, for instance, with a topper with a core in natural Talalay latex.
Toppers in cold foam, memory foam or latex
Just like ordinary mattresses, top mattresses can be made of different materials, each with their own specific properties. So you will certainly find a mattress topper that suits your budget, wishes and needs. As toppers are all about comfort, you can simply go for the one that is the most comfortable for you. Since you can't tell by sight, try it out at an Ergosleep® shop near you.
Mattress topper with cold foam
Toppers - just like ordinary mattresses - very often have a core of cold foam or HR foam. Mattress toppers made of cold foam are durable, comfortable and firm. The material ventilates well and is also resilient.
Memory foam mattress topper
Memory foam takes on the shape of your body when you lie on it. Your body makes an imprint in your mattress topper, so to speak, after which it needs time to return to its original shape. So you sink a little in a memory foam topper, limiting the freedom of movement in your sleep. This is why Ergosleep® prefers other materials and why we do not have toppers with memory foam in our range.
Mattress topper with natural latex
Natural latex is a real top quality material for mattress toppers: it is enormously supple and comfortable. Natural latex is a pricey product, but then it offers great advantages that you do not find with the cheaper synthetic latex. The synthetic variant ventilates very poorly, which makes for a warm and less pleasant sleeping environment. Natural latex such as pulse latex or Talalay has an open, air-permeable cell structure that ventilates well. All Ergosleep® latex toppers are made of natural latex.
What size is a mattress topper?
Mattress toppers come in all sizes, just like regular mattresses: from single to double mattress toppers and also intermediate sizes for a queen-size bed. Make sure all parts of your bed are aligned and definitely take into account your needs and build. If you are taller than 1.80m/5'9", it is best to get a longer mattress of 210cm or even 220cm.
- Length: 190, 200, 210 to 220cm
- Width: from 70 to 200cm
- Height: 8 or 11cm
Some Ergosleep® toppers also come in different firmnesses.
