| Sana sleeping advice: for a dust mite free sleeping environment |
 |
Choosing a sleeping system:
- Choose a mattress with a washable cover (at 95°C).
- Avoid mattresses in which wool or other animal materials have been used.
- You should avoid upholstered beds and box springs. Choose a wooden or metallic bed frame.
- Buy a completely new mattress, this means: don’t just buy a new cover. For your old mattress might be infested with dust mites. Also buy a new pillow.
- If you want, you can wrap the core of your mattress and your pillow in an allergen-proof membrane (core protector). As such, the dust mites and/or their droppings cannot penetrate into the core.
- It is preferable to lay your mattress on slats.
- Wash your mattress and pillow covers, as well as your eiderdowns at least 4 times a year at 95°C.
- Wash your bedding weekly at 95°C.
- All bedding has to be washed at a high temperature (90-95°C), because only this washing temperature guarantees that the entire contents of your washer drum reaches a sufficiently high temperature to kill the dust mites.
The bedroom’s environment:
- Make sure the bedroom has a smooth floor covering that can be cleaned with a fluid. Rugs and fitted carpets are altogether wrong.
- Choose curtains made in a material that can be washed 4 times a year. Washable curtain systems are even better.
- It is preferable not to paint or paper the walls, unless you use washable wallpaper.
- Clean the floor preferably twice a week. First, remove all dust using a dust absorbing cloth. Next, mop the floor. We advise against vacuuming. The air filters of most vacuum cleaners do not stop the allergens, causing you to spread them in the room instead of removing them.
- Maintain a low relative humidity in the room (preferably less than 55%).
- Air your room daily, except when it’s foggy and when the air bears lots of pollen to which you are allergic.
Activities
- Turn down the covers quietly; as such you avoid air turbulence and the spread of allergens.
- Keep your wardrobes closed as much as possible. It is best when they are not in the bedroom.
- Before wearing the summer or winter clothes that have been stored for a whole season, you should wash them.
